Expert opinions

Some transport businesses need to be rescaled to reflect actual demand, with profitability and liquidity treated as top priorities. It’s also worth rethinking the operating model – should companies continue relying heavily on their own fleet, with high fixed costs, or shift toward freight forwarding, which offers greater flexibility in adapting to market fluctuations?

Dr Paweł Trębicki
managing director, Rhenus Road Freight - Central East Region

If the European economy manages to sustain a recovery in 2025, increased demand could gradually lift rates over the medium to long term. Lanes involving Spain are likely to see largest upward price pressure; Spanish Economic growth continues to significantly outpace the rest of Europe and whilst set to slow it will continue to add significant upward demand pressure to rates in 2025.

Nathaniel Donaldson
data and modelling manager, Transport Intelligence

Europe’s economic rebound in 2025 is expected to be moderate, with stronger growth in Southern and Central-Eastern European countries, while major economies like Germany are likely to see a slower pace of recovery.

Andrzej Misiak
COO, EffectIT AB

The shortage of transport capacity is due to the lack of orders, a shortage of drivers, but also to offers that can no longer be carried out profitably because of high operating costs—and are therefore being rejected. Many transport companies in Germany are no longer responding to tenders from major retail and industrial clients because they cannot achieve cost-covering freight rates.

Additionally, the business practices of some foreign freight forwarders operating in Germany are causing frustration. On top of that, the excessive bureaucracy coming from Berlin and Brussels is leading to growing disillusionment among many transport operators.

Dr Dirk Eberhardt
spokesperson for the Federal Association of Road Haulage, Logistics and Waste Disposal (BGL)
